Do you ever find yourself asking if this is what I'm going to be doing for the rest of my life?
If so, you’re not alone.
According to Yale Medicine, as many as 70 percent of young adults are experiencing a quarter-life crisis.
In 2022, 60% of people reported being emotionally detached at work, and 19% reported being miserable.
I get so many questions about how I do what I do. Working remote, running a business from the wilderness, and creating content.
It was a choice, and as a creator, you have that choice too.
It's not easy to do, but if it was everyone would be doing it.
In the last year, 32% of those between 25 and 44 have considered a career change.
Choosing the identity you want for yourself is a different challenge.
Identity can be broken into 3 different aspects.
- The relational independent self-construal (individual identity),
- Think job, skills, hobbies etc
- the relational dependent self-construal (social identity),
- This includes your relationship with friends, romantic partners and family
- the meta-personal self-construal (meaning and purpose identity).
- Your higher purpose
There’s an old-school Japanese philosophy about the meaning of life that I reference often called Ikigai.
Ikigai refers to a passion that gives value and joy to life. Basically the intersection of utilizing your passion to find a career that brings you joy and purpose. This is one good way to try and identify who you are and what you want.
A few other ways to help discover your identity is by:
- Identify your personality type
- Observe your feelings
- Contemplate who you can relate to and look up to
- Consider What Your Core Values Are
- Try New Things
This may sound obvious, so consider this a nudge: TRY NEW THINGS.
Trying new things is vital, getting out of the comfort zone is the key to the start of growth while improving performance, creativity, and learning.
New and unfamiliar situations trigger a unique part of the brain that releases dopamine, nature’s make-you-happy chemical– the unique region that is only activated by seeing and experiencing new things.
Everyone is at different stages in their lives, so it's crucial to remember to not compare.
Life is what you make it, and it’s never too late to make a change.
What’s important is that you leave it better.
