Creativity is something I'm constantly trying to optimize for, and there is one simple question you can ask yourself that will help improve your effectiveness in about 20 mins.

Have you drunk enough water today?

It seems like the most basic concept and there are several other elements I'll talk about in the coming weeks, but we often forget how important our physiological needs are to functionality and productivity.

I spend a lot of my time at altitudes of around 4,000 feet but can venture up to heights over 10,000 feet on a given adventure.

At these altitudes, your body can get dehydrated at about double the rate compared to sea level, which can lead to a lot of problems.

Ever notice how foggy your brain can get and how tasks were taking two, to three times as long to complete? Were you drinking enough water, or did you have a few too many other drinks the night before?

A study of women showed an increased rate of error of about 12% when dehydrated. You may not only be taking longer, but you are putting out less quality work.

You can reverse these dehydration issues in as little as 20 minutes by just drinking some water.

Not only do you mentally decline, but your physical strength declines as well.

Less Strength: 2%

Less Power: 3%

Less High-intensity Endurance: 10%

(Approximations)

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs starts at the bottom with physiological needs which includes the need for shelter, water, food, warmth, rest, and health. Without giving your body and mind these basic requirements, it can be nearly impossible to function properly and way more susceptible to burnout.

We get about 20% of our water from food - most notably - fruits and vegetables, but many of us aren't eating right to begin with.

As I properly manage my water, sleep, diet, and exercise - my productivity skyrockets. Not only in my professional life but in my personal as well.

They are all connected.

If you're feeling overwhelmed and even these vital tasks seem like too much to adjust at once, take it in small steps, even if it requires setting an hourly reminder to drink your water.

Without taking care of yourself, you can't take care of business.
